My Simple Life

Decades have passed since high school, college, raising two kids without  touching a pair of knitting needles.  Then I took a week trip to visit my mom, who happened to live on Lake Superior back in 2004.

She was always knitting or crocheting something.  Within a couple of days, I longed to start a project (any project, actually)!  Since that visit back in early 2000, I've made a few afghans, baby blankets, shawls, sweaters, countless scarves, hats, mittens, booties, but mostly socks.  When my hands are busy, I stay focused on the here and now.

I've found that my handiwork with yarn has helped my fingers remain more dexterous as I age.  And, it helps me control mindless eating out of boredom.  Research has shown crafts like knitting and crocheting may even help starve off a decline in brain function with age, and memory loss.  So, finally something to do that is not bad for you.  (You can't count the yarn hoarding, however!)

For nearly two years, I have had a sustained addiction to YouTube's knitting podcasts, especially "Inside 23," the "Grocery Girls," "Voolenvine," and "Skeindeer,"  I for one try not to miss a single weekly meeting of my virtual knitting groups.  There is never a problem missing a single meeting this way.  And, they have groups to join, posting photos of your projects, knit a longs, and even support!

I keep a journal of my singular accomplishments on "Ravelry", to boost my spirits when needed.  There is never a lack of gifts in my world, and I love having a sense of purpose during difficult times.  There isn't a day when my knitting needles are not up helping me cope with stress, providing a sense of order, and allowing my brain time to solve problems.

I like the simple life, especially my knitting world.
